Team Building Week

This week at Crestwood focused on team building.  Groups participated in activities that focused on collaboration, cooperation, and of course teamwork.  Some of the activities included “The Maze”, “The Pipeline”, “Cup Castles”, and “Don’t Let the Ball Fall”.

SUPER SIX VALUE #1 - ACCEPTANCE

This week at camp we taught our campers about Acceptance.  Acceptance means you see another human being, or a new friend, as unique as you are.  Developing kindness and compassion is a critical part of a young child's development.  The ability to accept others -even if they are different- and feel compassion for them is an essential component of social competancy.

TGIM

One of our beliefs at Crestwood is to “turn the week around”.  We throw out the “TGIF” philosophy and replace it with “TGIM”.  Thank Goodness It’s Monday and we can get another week of joy started at camp.  This week our TGIM theme kicked off with our Monday morning radio show in front of the clubhouse.  We then had the privilege of all our campers from Kindergarten and up, playing some Ultimate Simon Sez in our Dome.

Visiting Days

Open visiting has begun this summer for campers going into 1st through 7th (Senior Rec) grade.  Family members are always welcome on our grounds Tuesday through Thursday during the visiting hours of 10am - 2:30pm.  Visiting is not open during the final week of camp or on rainy days.

Pre-school visiting was last Wednesday and Thursday.  Campers had a blast showing off their swim and sports skills to their parents and loved ones.

Parent & Child

There are new friends ready to be made in our Parent & Child program.  Our youngest campers really enjoy their time at Crestwood along with a parent by their side.

Futures Day

Crestwood offers parents with kids ages 2-4 a chance to enjoy a complimentary morning or afternoon at camp with their child.   The first day was this past Monday and both parents and their children had an amazing time.

Give a Get a Compliment Day

We all know how good it feels to get a compliment.  So why not have a day where we all use our words to make others feel good.  Give Respect – Get Respect.

Team Day

This past Wednesday during our Team Building week, all groups were asked to select a unique appearance and make their way into camp dressed as a “team”.

Handball Tournament

This week some of our older boys have been participating in a handball tournament.  Handball is a fast paced game that fits right into the “team building” theme this week.  Participants will find much more success on the handball field when they are working well together.

Hula Hoops Olympics

There was plenty of hoopla this past Thursday as our soon to be first graders participated in the Hula Hoop Olympics.  Campers rolled, threw, spun, and even raced hoops all over our back fields.

Indoor Days

It never rains at Crestwood, but sometimes we have the need for an “indoor day”.   Since any day at Crestwood is a great day, even indoor days are filled with fun.  Recently during some indoor days, our campers, accompanied by our staff, got to spend their time at a bowling alley, a gymnastics studio, or even the Hub sports complex.

Congratulations to the following groups.

They are our 2017 Cheer Contest Champions!

 Week 1 - Welcome Week

Make a Friend Name Games – Thursday June 29, 2017

On Thursday June 29th, buses began rolling in as campers and staff were welcomed back to another amazing summer at Crestwood.  On day number one, groups participated in a variety of activities to “Make a Friend” and get to know one another a little better.

Red, White, & Blue Day Friday June 30, 2017

Traditionally the last camp day before the 4th of July becomes our Red, White, and Blue Dress-Up day at Crestwood.  On Friday June 30th, our grounds became a place of patriotism.  Campers and staff showed they are “Proud to be Americans” as they modeled their red, white, and blue outfits.

Red, White, and Blue Day brings an additional tradition at Crestwood.  It is also the day that our youngest campers march in our parade.  Campers are “accessorized” with flags, necklaces, bracelets, and more, and march around our office circle.  Campers show off their pride for their group and their country as they stride behind their banner in their patriotic attire.

Our first Friday of the summer is also a day to dance.  We kickoff our Friday Special Events schedule with a DJ Dance Party.  It is always “Pure Joy” for anyone who attends as our field transforms to one enormous dance floor.

 Spirit Week

Crestwood Spirit Day – Wednesday July 5, 2017

This past Wednesday everyone had the opportunity to show their Crestwood spirit and dress in our green and white colors.

Group Cheer Contest – Wednesday July 5, 2017

This past Wednesday was also the beginning of our “Group Cheer Contests”.  All our groups are asked to put together a cheer, chant, or dance.  The contest is judged on creativity, originality, and enthusiasm.  Groups perform under our lunch tent during lunch periods. A winner from each of the following age groups will be chosen next week: pre-school/K, 1st & 2nd grade, and 3rd grade and up.  Congratulations to all participants, finalists, and winners.

Navaho Rock Star Day - Thursday July 6, 2017

This is the day that our 3rd grade ladies have their own dress-up day and come to camp as “Rock Stars”. They spent time with their friends taking fun “rock star” pictures and pretending to be famous while lip syncing and dancing around.

Pull Outs and Clinics

SUMMER 2017

OPTIONAL PULL-OUT CLUBS & CLINICS

If your child has a special interest,
we have the club for them

In addition to the wide array of activities that your children will enjoy every day, we have other "pull-out" clubs and clinics (listed below) for 1st-6th graders (some clubs require older campers) that can be incorporated into their day, allowing customization based on specific interests and special needs. These clubs and clinics are optional. Please note that children will enjoy many of these activities as part of their regular schedule in which case clubs are an opportunity to go more in depth in an activity.

Campers do miss the group activity on their schedule to participate in these clubs.  We generally try to offer the same club at varied times throughout the week so that our Administrators can try to schedule your child for clubs at an agreeable time with as few conflicts as possible.

We've put together a full list of clubs below with some descriptions and how they are scheduled. If you see a club missing, ask us, and if there is enough interest maybe we will start a new one. Grades listed are for the club only. Saturday's Family Fun and Clothing Day is a great opportunity to meet many of the club (activity) leaders and to discuss options with our staff.  You may be asking why we offer so much?  We VALUE individuality, creativity and independence. We like to see existing talents cultivated and to help campers discover new ones.

New Clubs for 2017
Magic Club- For grades 3-7.  Amaze your friends and parents with tricks and illusions.  A professional magician (& teacher) will be visiting Crestwood once per week revealing & teaching the secrets only true magicians know.  This club Wednesdays from 12:30PM-1:30PM and 1:30PM-2:30PM (1hour class).

Campers will be learning basic sewing skills on sewing machines and will be able to take home a project that they made themselves.  This program will run once per week for two weeks and will take place as block of approximately 2 hours during the camp day. We can't wait to see what your kids create!
This club will run on Tuesday afternoons and Wednesday mornings for children entering grades 4-7th.   NOTE: Campers will be required to sign up for this workshop and will be expected to commit to the two weeks they are assigned.

Makerspace (S.T.E.M.)
A Makerspace is... a place where people can share tools and ideas to make stuff.  Makerspaces promote skills important for 21st century learning and for life.  We want campers who are initiators, engaged, persevering, collaborative, problem-solvers, innovative, creative, confident, critical-thinking, and flexible.  Makerspaces have the ability to promote all of these critical attributes.  Makerspaces are an ideal place for children to explore STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math) concepts in a fun and non-competitive environment.  Makerspace will be run by our Lego/Rebotics teacher at various times on Mondays, Tuesdays, and Wednesdays.

  • Sports Clubs - Run by our Athletic Director, Ken Korder, and staff of talented sports coaches.  Dates and Times vary. (softball, basketball, soccer, lacrosse, hockey and football)

  • Tennis “Team” - Our Tennis Pros–Brad and Harold– are available for extra instruction and match play. Dates and Times vary.

  • Swim Team - For those campers entering grades 1-7 who are advanced swimmers (Crestwood swim level intermediate 1 and above), we offer a fun opportunity to join our swim team. Crestwood's swim team, led by our swim coaches, practices during the regular camp day and has intra/intercamp meets throughout the summer.  Meets one period in the afternoon on Mondays thru Thursdays.

  • Fashion Club - Led by former fashion industry professional, Lori Jurgens, learn how to develop, illustrate and design your own clothing just like your favorite designers.  Club members entering 4th thru 7th grade will meet during elective time on Mondays & Wednesdays (period 10 & 11)

  • Camp Musical and Crestwood's Got Talent (aka Crestwood Idol) – Directors Bruce and Jared will take on the Madagascar Jr. for this summer’s musical production. Auditions (everyone gets a part) begin during our first week and the show will take place week 7.  For grades 2-7.  Rehearsals are generally periods 7 & 8, a certain number of days per week based on the part.  Our mid-summer show, "Crestwood's Got Talent", a vocal performance and variety show will also be a big hit.  The show will be during week 4.  Sign up on Family Fun and Clothing Day.  Second grade campers are required to choose Drama as their elective to be in the mid summer show.

  • Fine Arts Club - Our artist in residence, Jessica, provides opportunities for visual artistic expression.  Fine Arts is open all the time on a drop in basis with some limits to give all children equal opportunities. Grades 2-7.  Closed Wednesday mornings for Rocketry.

  • Bike Club – Go out on our bike trail with our bike specialist.  Dates and Times vary. Grades 1-7 based on riding ability.

  • Karate Club - Learn the basics of Martial Arts  including strong basics like blocking, kicking, and simple self defense methods with Sensei Jason from Busto's Martial Arts.  Dates and Times vary.  Grades 1-7

  • Trapeze & Circus Show - Learn the tricks of the trade - culminates with a circus / trapeze camper performance.  Dates and Times vary.  Grades 2-7.

  • Guitar & Keyboard Club – learn guitar or piano with Music Man Mike and Amanda (1st grade and older).  Dates and Time vary.

  • Math & Reading - We can offer remediation pull-out clubs in Reading & Math for interested campers.  Dates and Times vary. Grades 1-7.

As always, most of the activities at Crestwood are available for optional pull-out clubs i.e. Golf, Archery, Nature, Gymnastics, Climbing Tower and more!

There is so much to do at Crestwood that for many campers these optional programs are not necessary.  The point of this e-mail is not to pressure you as parents or your campers into choosing these options.  We want you to know that they are available.  It is our goal to meet the needs of every child.  In addition to you discussing any of these options with your child, our Group Leaders, Division Heads and Specialists will frequently recommend these options to your campers if they see an interest.  Campers can join or try most clubs during the course of the summer.  Most clubs will not begin until week 2 of the summer.
